STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN - SEPT. 13: Hundreds of people in Stockholm, Sweden, held a protest on Saturday, Sept.13, against the Israeli government’s plans to occupy Gaza and forcibly displace Palestinians.

Gathering in the Odenplan area, the demonstrators carried signs reading “Zionist Israel, get out of Palestine,” “Killer U.S., get out of the Middle East,” “No to genocide,” and “Zionism will be defeated, resistance will prevail,” and chanted slogans such as “Freedom for Palestine, no to Netanyahu’s plan.” The group later marched to the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Swedish activist Malin Akertrom, who participated in the demonstration, told an Anadolu Agency reporter that a crime of genocide is being committed in Gaza in full view of the world.

Emphasizing that Israel’s attacks on Palestine began before October 7, she said that Swedish politicians are not taking action against the ongoing genocide committed by Israel, citing Hamas attacks as the reason, but added that this is not sustainable.

Akertrom emphasized that Palestinians have the right to defend themselves just like Ukrainians.

She noted that people in Gaza are dying of hunger and that the same situation continues in the West Bank.

She added that the media portrays the conflict as a war between Israel and Hamas, which she said is very misleading, and stressed that Palestinians are defending their own land.

According to her, international law grants Palestine the right to resist, just like Ukraine. She also criticized the Swedish government for what she described as a hypocritical stance, accepting civilian wounded from Ukraine but not from Gaza.

The Israeli army has continued a brutal offensive on the Gaza Strip, killing at least 64,300 Palestinians since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave, which is facing famine.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
