Storyline: The social and economic reform of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's government has sparked different reactions across the country. Merz delivered a speech in the Bundestag on Wednesday, emphasizing that Germany faces a "critical moment" and needs to make a "major decision" in the future. Merz's new government has planned to address population aging, fiscal pressure and social equity through the reform. Parliamentary group leader of the Green party Katharina Droege criticized the government for lacking foresight and courage. Droege holds the view that the government's policies are more favorable to the wealthy while demanding that ordinary people cut back their spending. Within the ruling coalition, there are also different opinions. Parliamentary group leader of the Social Democratic Party Matthias Miersch emphasized that reform must be based on social equity, and advocated to increase fiscal revenue through higher wealth tax and inheritance tax to ensure the sustainability of social security. This is fundamentally at odds with Mertz's explicit refusal to raise taxes on the rich people. Although Mertz called for the establishment of a "new consensus", the parties of the coalition government have yet to find a common balance point on key issues. Analysts point out that the Mertz government proposed reform under the pressure of high debt and high expectations, and its logic is to maintain the sustainability of the fiscal and welfare systems by releasing economic potential. But critics argue that these ideas lack specific plans and remain vague about how to fill the budget gap of hundreds of billions of euros in the future. Meanwhile, changes in population structure, demands for social equity, and the security and economic pressures brought about by external geopolitical conflicts have all led to sharp differences in the direction of reform within the German political arena.
