SEA OF OKHOTSK - RELEASED ON SEPT. 19 - RESTRICTION: USERS MUST CREDIT “RUSSIAN DEFENCE MINISTRY” HANDOUT, MUST NOT OBSCURE LOGO —EDITORIAL USE ONLY — Two Russian Pacific Fleet nuclear-powered submarines carried out a live-fire drill in the Sea of Okhotsk, striking a naval target more than 250 kilometers (155 miles) away, the Defense Ministry said Thursday.
The Krasnoyarsk and Omsk submarines launched Oniks and Granit cruise missiles during the exercise, all of which hit their target, according to the ministry.
The missile drill was part of a command and staff exercise aimed at protecting maritime communications in the northern Pacific, as well as the coastlines of the Kamchatka and Chukotka regions and surrounding islands.
Surface ships and naval aviation units secured the firing area. The exercise involved more than 10 warships and boats, several nuclear submarines, aircraft, helicopters and coastal Bastion missile systems, the ministry said.
