The Chinese Peacekeeping Infantry Battalion to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) regularly provides free fresh water for locals in need, bringing them not only survival, but dignity and hope. Nakitum Village, on the outskirts of country's capital Juba, is among the poorest villages in South Sudan. The White Nile cuts through this land, but safe drinking water is a luxury for many. A barrel of clean water can cost up to two U.S. dollars. However, the IMF estimates that the daily income for villagers is often less than one dollar. Residents used to collect water from rain and streams, but the water is too unsanitary to drink or use for cooking. "When they take this water, it ends up now affecting their bodies. Very dirty," said Elisa Mawa, a local villager. To ease the suffering, the Chinese Infantry Battalion has been delivering fresh water to those in need, regularly and free of charge. "We have water now, haven't we? I'm very happy," said Betty Sumbua, a local villager. "They are going to eat today, and they are going to take water for cooking, for drinking," Mawa said.
