Japanese military plane veers off runway causing Niigata runways to shut for hours
A Japanese military plane veered off the runway, prompting the closure of the airport.
Footage shows the U-125A search and rescue aircraft coming to a complete stop on the tarmac on Friday, September 19.
Authorities said the incident occurred around 11:50 am following a training mission with the Air Self-Defence Force (ASDF) aircraft at the Niigata Airport.
An incident report from the Aviation Safety Network stated: 'A JASDF U-125A veered off the runway 10 to the left while landing at Niigata Airport (KIJ/RJSN) during a proficiency training flight. There were no personal injuries.
'Both runways were closed for 3 hours and 50 minutes, causing 16 commercial flights to be cancelled.'
No injuries were reported among the five crew members on board the aircraft, which carries the registration number 82-3008.
The plane is assigned to the ASDF's rescue unit based at Niigata, located adjacent to the airport.
