Tourist 'high on cannabis' falls to her death from hotel in Bangkok
A Moroccan tourist allegedly fell to her death from a hotel while smoking cannabis in Thailand.
Chaimae Hard, 21, reportedly took the substance - available legally throughout the city - while swimming with her boyfriend at the Metacity Bangkok hotel on Soi Sukhumvit 13.
As the couple relaxed in the outdoor pool on the seventh floor, the girlfriend was said to have fallen over the safety railing before smashing her head on the pavement below.
Security guards and hotel staff rushed to check on the guest but she reportedly died from a serious head wound at the scene.
Lumphini Police arrived after being notified at around 2:25 am on September 20. They found Chaimae half-naked and lying in a pool of blood.
Chaimae's boyfriend, also of Moroccan nationality, said he and a male friend were smoking cannabis on the balcony when she asked to join them.
He claimed she suddenly began talking about killing herself shortly before jumping over the edge of the swimming pool when he had his back turned.
Police said Chaimae's body was taken to King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital for a post-mortem examination as they investigate the exact cause of her death, which is the latest in a series of fatal falls from hotels in the country.
On September 17, Aussie tourist Timothy John Robinson, 55, allegedly slashed his face with a knife before jumping off the sixth floor of a hotel in Thai 'Sin City' Pattaya.
He survived the fall but was left fighting for his life after landing on a BYD car next to the building.
While on September 6, British pensioner Keith Jones, 74, reportedly plunged from the 10th floor of the D-Beach Hotel in the same city.
The holidaymaker, from Prestatyn, Wales, was found lying face-down in a pool of blood, next to a busy road. Police said they were investigating if the fall was an accident.
Thailand decriminalised marijuana in 2022, making it the first Asian nation to do so.
However, the lack of regulations caused a surge in unregulated sales and use, particularly in tourist areas Bangkok, Phuket, and Pattaya.
Government officials are now seeking to outlaw recreational cannabis use by requiring medical certificates to purchase the drug.
