An Austrian tourist plunged to his death after a sex, drink, and drugs binge holiday in the Thai red light district.

Mario Fruhwirt, 49, checked into the hotel on the notorious Soi 4 lined with thousands of gogo bars, massage parlours and street sex workers in Bangkok, Thailand.

Hotel staff said the European, from Wagna, regularly took prostitutes back to his room where they smoked now-legal cannabis available from stalls outside the building and drank together until the early hours of the morning.

However, they heard windows smash and found his dead body on the ground outside the Royal Ivory Nana hotel at around 1:30 am local time Wednesday morning.

Police and paramedics arrived but Mario was pronounced dead at the scene. Pictures show he had suffered severe blood loss.

Speaking today, a receptionist at the hotel said: 'Mr Fruhwirt often brought different prostitutes back to his room. He smoked a lot of cannabis, we know because it often smelled strong. He also drank several types of alcoholic beverages. The empty cans and bottles were in his room.

'When this happened there was nobody else in the room with him. But he had been smoking and drinking. The CCTV has been checked but the police have not found the time he entered his room. They will check again later. According to the current information, we are sure he was alone at the moment of the incident.'

Police Major Chakrapong Pitakkornsakul from the Lumpini Police Station said officers received a report a tourist had fallen from a hotel room. He went to the scene with forensics investigators and ambulance staff.

The police found Mario's dead body on the floor facing down, wearing only black underpants. They also found a wound on his head with several pieces of windows and awnings around his body.

The hotel staff told police the incident happened around 1:30 am when Mario plunged from room 311 on the fourth floor. Inside his room, the police found several types of alcoholic beverages and cannabis but there was no one inside.

The room's windows were also broken. The hotel manager told them that Mario booked the room alone on January 3 and was supposed to check out on January 14.

They said that Mario was alone on the day of the incident even though he often brought ladies to his room.

Police said that Mario had been staying in his room since Tuesday evening and they were not looking for anybody else to interview.

Police Major Chakrapong Pitakkornsakul said: 'We didn't find any sign of someone staying in the room with him and there was so sign of a struggle or a robbery. There was nobody else in the room with him.

'We will later inform the Austrian Embassy to help contact his relatives for questioning and organising his funeral.'

The street where Mario had been staying is called Soi 4, or Soi Nana, and is known as one of the most degenerate areas of the Thai capital. It is home to the Nana Plaza three-floor complex of gogo bars as well as hundreds of other massage parlours, bars, and street female and transgender sex workers from Thailand, the Philippines, Russia, Africa and the Middle East.

Cannabis stalls that police are powerless to control have recently flooded the toxic mix after ministers - looking for corporate revenue from medicinal marijuana - decriminalized the psychosis-causing drug.
