VARIOUS OF CHILDREN WAITING AT HOSPITAL CORRIDOR WITH THEIR FAMILIESGAZA, PALESTINE - SEPTEMBER 22: The pediatric clinic at Nasser Hospital in the city of Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip has reached critical levels of overcrowding with the influx of refugees from the north due to Israeli attacks and blockade. Speaking to an Anadolu correspondent, Dr. Ahmad al-Farra, Director of the Pediatric and Maternity Department at Nasser Hospital, said that the children's ward has a capacity of 40, but in addition to the current 200 patients, another 1,000 patients have arrived in the last 24 hours. Due to the shortage of beds in intensive care, children were lying in corridors without beds or blankets, and two or three babies were being kept in a single incubator, which could increase the risk of infection and lead to deaths, Al-Farra said. Emphasizing the need for urgent medical supplies with humanitarian aid to enter Gaza, Al-Farra called for the opening of border crossings and an end to the war and the wave of displacement from northern Gaza, stating, “It is vital that the destroyed hospitals in the area are reopened.” Anwar al-Gassas, a Gazan mother staying at the hospital with her child, told Anadolu reporter, "My daughter Alma al-Gassas was brought here due to a stomach infection and dehydration. She should normally be in a private bed, but she has been lying on the floor in the corridor since yesterday. The hospital is overflowing, all the beds are full. There is no hygiene; children are vulnerable to new infections. The war has destroyed our children. The tents are dirty, every child easily gets sick. We came to Nasser Hospital because there are no other functioning hospitals left in Gaza, but here too we have to receive treatment on the floor." Israel has killed more than 65,000 Palestinians in a brutal offensive in Gaza following a cross-border attack by Hamas on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave, which is facing famine. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
