Mylor Church: A Touching Tribute to HMS Ganges' Lost Boys
Uncover the history of HMS Ganges, a Royal Navy training ship, and the touching memorial in Mylor Church dedicated to the young boys who lost their lives during its 33 years of service.HMS GANGES, a retired 84-gun man-of-war, was converted in 1886 into a Royal Navy boys’ training ship to be anchored across from Mylor Harbour. There, the ship remained for 33 years, with some 14,000 boys passing through on their way to the Fleet. The boys, mostly between 15 and 17 years old, were sent to the ship when first recruited to learn the rudiments of drill and discipline.
The GANGES memorial in the churchyard has the names of more than 50 boys, with an average age of 16, who died during the ship’s stay. Most apparently died from what today are not fatal illnesses, principally, it seems, the flu. Conditions for the boys were probably still tough by today’s standards, but they may have improved during the ship’s stay. Mylor churchyard, Cornwall, UK
