At least two people were killed and 48 others wounded in Israeli airstrikes on Yemen's Houthi-held capital Sanaa on Thursday, the Houthi-run health authorities said, calling the figures an "initial toll." The attacks began at 16:10 local time with Israeli warplanes dropping at lease six bombs in five minutes, according to China Central Television reporters in Sanaa. Israel's state-owned Kan TV reported that about 15 fighter jets took part in the attack, dropping around 65 bombs. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the strikes, saying in a statement that dozens of Israeli Air Force aircraft participated in the operation, which targeted Houthi general staff's headquarters, security and intelligence compounds, and other military camps. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said in a statement that the Air Force hit several military camps, including a Houthi General Staff's camp, eliminated dozens of Houthi militants, and destroyed stockpiles of drones and weapons. Katz said that the strikes were launched in retaliation for a drone attack in Israel's southern Red Sea resort city of Eilat on Wednesday, which reportedly wounded at least 20 people, including two people who were seriously wounded. The Houthi group in a statement on Wednesday night claimed responsibility for the drone attack. Israel has been conducting airstrikes on Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since 2024 in retaliation for Houthi missile and drone attacks on Israeli territory. The Houthis say their assaults are in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. Their attacks intensified after Israel killed senior Houthi government officials in Sanaa in August.
