Climber fatally plunges 200 metres after unroping to take photo on China's Mount Nama
On the morning of September 25 in Kangding, Ganzi Prefecture, Sichuan, a man tragically fell to his death while climbing Mount Nama. Video shows him repeatedly trying to stand up after stumbling, but failing, before vanishing from the sight of his companions.
The victim, a man in his 30s and an amateur climber, had reportedly unroped himself near an ice crevasse to take photos for fellow hikers. Without the protection of a safety rope or an ice axe, he tripped on his crampons while getting up and slid more than 200 metres from an altitude of 5,588 metres down to about 5,300 metres.
Rescue teams later recovered his body, confirming he had died in the fall.
Local authorities said Mount Nama is currently closed to climbers due to dangerous ice crevasse conditions. The man’s group had not registered their climb, making the attempt an unauthorised “illegal ascent.” Permits for Mount Nama have been suspended since August 6, 2024, and have not yet been reinstated.
