A livestream turned into a terrifying scene when British social media influencer Sam Pepper captured the exact moment a powerful earthquake struck Cebu on September 30, 2025.

The footage shows Pepper broadcasting from a rooftop bar, scrolling on his phone, when the ground suddenly shakes. Startled, he quickly gets up and evacuates with other guests and staff as the tremor intensifies.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) confirmed the quake measured magnitude 6.9, centred 21 kilometres northeast of Bogo City at a shallow depth of 5 km. The tectonic quake caused extensive structural damage across Cebu, leaving at least 53 people dead and 147 injured, with the toll expected to rise.

Several towns, including Bogo City, have declared a state of calamity. Authorities have recorded 611 aftershocks, with Phivolcs warning that more could continue for weeks.

The Philippines, located in the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is among the world’s most disaster-prone countries, averaging around 20 significant earthquakes every year.
