This is the shocking moment a small aircraft made an emergency landing on a highway in Brazil.

Footage shows the single-engine plane already grounded on the southbound lane of the Regis Bittencourt Highway (BR-116), in Juquitiba, Sao Paulo, on September 28.

The Public Security Department reported that the aircraft had departed from an airfield at kilometre 40 of the Raposo Tavares Highway in Cotia. It was flying over the Itapecerica da Serra region when it suffered a mechanical failure.

A report from the Aviation Safety Network stated that the aircraft, a Cessna 150M, was carrying two occupants at the time.

Officials added: 'The landing occurred on the south lane, blocking the right lane and the shoulder. There were no reports of injuries.'

Emergency services confirmed there were no fuel leaks. Fire crews and officers from the Federal Highway Police responded quickly, working to safely remove the plane and restore traffic flow on the route.

The cause of the mechanical failure remains under investigation.

The Regis Bittencourt Highway, which connects Sao Paulo to Curitiba, is notorious for accidents and hazardous driving conditions, particularly in mountainous stretches and during poor weather. It has been nicknamed the 'Highway of Death' due to its high accident rate.
