Phoenix, United States - October 04, 2025 10/04/2025 12:00 am GMT-0700 PHOENIX, Ariz. – Phoenix Fire Department crews responded to initial reports of a structure fire near the intersection of Greenway Road and 19th Avenue. According to a Phoenix FD captain at the scene, crews arrived to find what appeared to be a large column of smoke billowing from a storage lot behind a strip mall. Firefighters entered the storage yard and discovered chlorine gas billowing from multiple buckets of chlorine tablets. The assignment was quickly upgraded to a 1st alarm hazardous materials incident. Additional resources from the Phoenix FD, along with the Glendale Fire Department, responded to the scene to assist. Crews established a hot zone around the source of the chlorine gas and responded to the neighboring strip mall to evacuate occupants. Fortunately, all businesses within the strip mall were closed and unoccupied at the time of the incident. Firefighters remained at the scene for several hours, working to mitigate the off-gassing materials. Hazmat crews were positioned downwind of the hot zone and closely monitored air quality readings as well as wind speed and direction. No injuries have been reported.
