Worshippers smash coconuts to show their devotion at Hindu festival
Worshippers smashed coconuts on a street to show their devotion to deities at a Hindu festival in Thailand.
Footage shows locals hurling the tropical fruit to the ground with full force as they marked the Navaratri Festival in Bangkok on October 2.
Coconut juice and broken husks littered the streets during the celebration at Sri Maha Mariamman Temple.
Organisers had to clean up the mess afterwards.
Attende, Sukanya, said: 'I believe this will bring me good luck in the next year. It is an offering to the spirits.'
The coconut, known as the 'Fruit of God' in Hinduism, is frequently offered whole by devotees as a form of worship to gods.
The unusual ceremony is believed to attract prosperity, as coconuts - said to be a symbol of the Hindu gods Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh - are offered to the deities during auspicious occasions.
The Navaratri Festival is a nine-night Hindu celebration dedicated to the worship of the goddess Durga and her nine divine forms, symbolising the triumph of good over evil. It is marked with prayers, music, dancing, and rituals across India and by Hindu communities worldwide.
