VARIOUS OF WIDE SHOT OF SMOKE RISING OVER BUILDINGS FOLLOWING ISRAELI STRIKESGAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - OCT. 6: Israel has continued its air, sea, and ground attacks on Gaza on Monday, Oct. 6, despite US President Donald Trump’s call to immediately halt the assaults. Footage captured from Rashid Street showed heavy smoke rising from several areas in the southern part of Gaza City following Israeli strikes. Israel has maintained the blockade of Gaza, home to nearly 2.4 million people, for almost 18 years. Since October 2023, Israeli military operations have killed more than 67,000 Palestinians in Gaza — most of them women and children. The relentless bombardment has rendered the enclave all but uninhabitable, with widespread starvation and the spread of disease. US President Donald Trump urged Israel on Friday to “stop bombing Gaza immediately” after Hamas announced its willingness to release Israeli captives under his ceasefire proposal, saying he believed the movement was “ready for lasting peace.” On Sept. 29, Trump unveiled a 20-point plan that includes the release of all Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, a ceasefire, the disarmament of Hamas, and the rebuilding of Gaza. On Saturday, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that he is ready to implement the first phase of Trump’s Gaza plan, calling for the immediate release of all Israeli captives. Israeli military and media reports claimed the political leadership had ordered the cessation of Gaza City’s occupation and “reduction of military activity in the (Gaza) Strip to defensive operations only.”
