China: Foreign tourists snap up cutting-edge products at a bargain in S China tech hub
Storyline Foreign tourists snap up cutting-edge products at a bargain in S China tech hub Huaqiangbei, a sprawling electronics market in south China's Shenzhen City, has become a tourist hotspot, attracting a growing number of international visitors with affordable products Data shows that last year, more than 7,000 international shoppers visited the market every day. The appeal is twofold: cutting-edge innovation at a bargain. Shoppers hunt for everything from AI-powered glasses to miniature drones, with one phrase frequently on their lips: "Good price." Visitors: "Compared to Europe, very good price." "Good Prices." "Good Price." "We traveled around 40 countries and you will never find stuff like in Shenzhen." An unlikely beneficiary of foreigners' shopping sprees are suitcase shop owners. Often, when purchases pile up too high to carry, travelers end up buying an extra suitcase on the spot. One suitcase shop owner says it's a scene that plays out daily. Suitcase shop owner, Huaqiangbei Market: "They really like trendy Chinese products. After buying a lot of these items, they come to me to buy suitcases. Basically, I sell about 10 to 20 a day. Sometimes, they buy empty suitcases first to use for shopping. And other times, after buying a lot, they come carrying their purchases and then buy a suitcase." The wave of shopping-oriented travel at Huaqiangbei is fueled by China's relaxed visa policies and streamlined tax refund services. So far, China has extended its unilateral 30-day visa-waiver scheme for citizens of 48 countries until Dec. 31. [Restrictions: No access Chinese mainland]
