Fethi Juma, the owner of Gaza’s oldest zoo, said he was forced to flee the southern city of Rafah with his animals due to ongoing Israeli attacks. He appealed to international organizations for help as widespread famine takes its toll. Juma established Gaza’s first zoo in Rafah in 1991 with his own resources. Before the war, families visited during holidays and weekends, and the zoo featured cafés, play areas, and entertainment spaces that attracted many visitors. After the Israeli attacks began, Juma and his family relocated the animals from Rafah to Khan Younis, and later to Deir al-Balah. In a region where even people struggle to move without vehicles or proper roads, the family made the difficult journey with their animals, leaving many behind. Amid Gaza’s deepening famine, Juma said he can barely feed the remaining animals and urged international organizations to help evacuate them from the war-torn territory.
