Olympia, United States - October 05, 2025 On the night of October 5, an intruder broke into the Legislative Building, causing extensive damage. The State Reception Room, a site of historic significance and a symbol of Washington’s democracy, suffered major harm. Priceless, irreplaceable artifacts within the room were damaged during the incident. The Department of Enterprise Services (DES), which manages the Capitol Campus, temporarily closed the building on the morning of October 6 to ensure the safety of staff and the public. The building has since reopened, though some areas remain off-limits as damage assessments and repairs continue. DES Security alerted the Washington State Patrol, who apprehended the intruder and took him into custody. DES Director Matt Jones said, “I appreciate the rapid response from DES staff and collaboration with our emergency response partners. We are reviewing security at the State Capitol Campus to ensure the safety of all who work and visit the campus.” The Capitol Campus remains under heightened security as DES evaluates the damage and begins restoration. Additional details about the extent of damage and associated costs will be released as they become available.
