Belgium: Protest held in front of European Commission in Brussels against normalization with Israel
SHOTLIST: BRUSSELS, BELGIUM (OCT. 20, 2025) (ANADOLU - ACCESS ALL) 1. EXTERIOR OF EUROPEAN COMMISSION BUILDING WITH EU FLAGS 2. VARIOUS OF PROTESTERS GATHERED IN FRONT OF EUROPEAN COMMISSION HOLDING PALESTINIAN FLAG 3. CLOSE-UP OF SIGN READING “WE HAVE BEEN HERE CONSTANTLY FOR 25 HOURS” 4. PROTESTER HOLDING SIGN READING “STOP EU COMPLICITY” IN FRONT OF EU FLAGS 5. SOUNDBITEE (English) SPOKESPERSON FOR PROTESTERS, LAURA SULLIVAN SAYING: "The aim of the protest is to get the European Union to terminate the EU Israel Association Agreement, or otherwise known as the Trade Agreement. Ceasefire is very partial. It's just the first stage. There has been no justice for genocide. And in all of this, the question is what is the European Union going to do? It has significant levers with which it can influence the situation that is still rolling out. And so is it going to do that or not? We will stay here for as long as it takes to get that message through. Very many Europeans are concerned about this." BRUSSELS, BELGIUM - OCT. 20: A group of activists held an overnight protest in front of the European Commission building in Brussels on Monday, Oct. 20, calling on the EU to maintain pressure on Israel despite the cease-fire and to hold Tel Aviv accountable for alleged war crimes. Protesters, who spent the night outside the Commission with sleeping bags and umbrellas, demanded the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, also known as the trade agreement, and urged the bloc to impose sanctions. Carrying Palestinian flags and banners reading “End EU complicity” and “We’ve been here for 25 hours,” the group called for justice for Palestinians and accountability for Israel’s actions in Gaza. Speaking to Anadolu, activist and group spokesperson Laura Sullivan said, “The aim of the protest is to get the European Union to terminate the EU-Israel Association Agreement, or otherwise known as the Trade Agreement. Cease-fire is very partial. It’s just the first stage. There has been no justice for genocide. And in all of this, the question is what is the European Union going to do? It has significant levers with which it can influence the situation that is still rolling out.” Sullivan added that the group will continue its sit-in for as long as necessary to send their message, saying many Europeans are deeply concerned about the ongoing situation. The protest came as the European Commission recently proposed sanctions on Israel, including suspending provisions of the EU-Israel Association Agreement and imposing customs tariffs, as well as restrictions on two Israeli ministers held responsible for violence in the occupied Palestinian territories. EU leaders are expected to discuss the proposal at their upcoming summit on Oct. 23.
