A Fiery Tradition: The Explosive 'Ingoria War' Lights Up Diwali Night in Savarkundla
Every year on Diwali night, the town of Savarkundla in Gujarat witnesses a unique and fiery celebration known as the Ingoria War — a traditional battle where people throw homemade fireballs at each other. This remarkable tradition has been ongoing for over six decades and symbolizes community spirit and cultural heritage.
On Diwali night, the streets of Savarkundla transform into a battlefield of sparks and fire. Known as the Ingoria War, this local tradition sees young men joyfully engaging in a fiery game using Ingoria — handmade fireballs crafted from natural materials and filled with combustible powder.
The youth handle the flaming fireballs as if holding roses, fearlessly tossing them at each other in a symbolic battle. What began as a playful fight between the villages of Savar and Kundla has now evolved into a larger event held at three main city junctions: Navli Chowk, Round Circle, and Dewlagaate Area.
Amazingly, despite the intensity and fire involved, no serious injuries or burns have ever been reported. People from big cities like Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Rajkot travel to witness this thrilling spectacle.
Preparation for this unique battle begins a month before Diwali. Young men from nearby rural areas collect Ingoria fruits from trees. These are dried, their bark peeled off, and a small hole is made in each. The hollow fruits are then filled with a mixture of gunpowder, sulfur, red powder (surkhar), and charcoal dust.
Once filled, the hole is sealed with a special type of river stone and left to dry. On Diwali night, thousands of these fireballs are packed into bags, ready for a battle of light and tradition.
This extraordinary event is not just a celebration — it’s a display of courage, community, and the living heritage of Savarkundla.
