The night of Christ’s Resurrection, part of the Easter festivities, was marked by the island’s unique and fiery tradition known as the "Rocket War" (Rouketopolemos). In the annual traditional event in the Vrontados neighborhood, the congregations of Saint Markos and Panagia Erithiani churches launched thousands of homemade rockets at each other's bell towers, creating a spectacular visual display for onlookers. In preparation for the event, city teams installed protective wire mesh around buildings in areas where rockets are likely to land, while firefighters took extra precautions to prevent potential fires. Small fires caused by the rockets were quickly extinguished by the emergency services. Passed down through generations, this long-standing tradition continues to draw large crowds and remains one of the most visually striking Easter customs in Chios.
