The centuries-old custom, practiced for around 250 years, is not seen as chaos but as a blessed ritual. It’s believed that partaking in this divine food ensures good health for the entire year.

To prevent any mishaps during the frenzied rush, police maintain tight security as the entire 151-man (over 3,000 kg) offering disappears within minutes. The looted food is later shared among villagers, symbolising community spirit and devotion.

In Dakor, a famous pilgrimage town in Gujarat’s Kheda district, an ancient and unique tradition continues to captivate thousands every year. On the day following the Gujarati New Year, devotees offer Lord Ranchhodraiji a grand Annakut — a mountain of over 3,000 kilograms of food, including sweets, rice, fruits, and delicacies.

But what makes this ritual truly remarkable is what follows — the “loot.” Once the temple doors open, invited villagers from nearly 80 surrounding villages rush forward, joyfully “looting” the sacred offering amid chants of “Jai Ranchhod!”
