Exclusive footage reveals the shocking reality of Bonfire Night in Birmingham. Witness the fireworks frenzy as police battle to regain control amidst scenes of chaos and disruption.

This was terrifying moment fireworks were set off towards people, vehicles and the police as battles commenced in a British city.

Bonfire night brought explosions and screaming echoing around Birmingham on Wednesday 5th November evening into Thursday morning as students from the both Aston University and Birmingham City University took to the streets with an arsenal of fireworks.

The chaos took hold mainly on Staniforth Street but it also spilled over onto Lancaster Circus and near the Aston Expressway.

West Midlands Police sent in their riot teams but the shear number of people outnumbered the officers who used shields and batons to keep the crowds at bay.

At least 3 people were arrested during the shocking disturbance that took place less than 200 metres from Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Officers had predicted the night of chaos by placing a Section 60 order around the city centre including the areas affected. The powers allow police to stop and search anyone without reason.

Hooded men were seen holding large roman candles and multi-shot barrages, aiming them at anyone they saw fit as a target.

Officers also arrested 4 teenagers in the nearby area of Dale End as more fireworks were let off in the city centre.

Inspector Matthew Minton said: ‘We made four arrests this evening as violent disorder broke out where members of the public and our officers were attacked with fireworks. Fortunately no-one has been seriously hurt. We also seized weapons and fireworks as we deployed our Section 60 powers to stop and search.

‘We had robust plans in place tonight to respond to any Bonfire Night disorder. Behaviour like what we have seen this evening simply won’t be tolerated.’
