Panic erupts as school sports day is disrupted by fighting along Thai-Myanmar border
Panic erupted at a school as clashes broke out between Burmese soldiers and resistance forces along the Thai-Myanmar border.
The Ban Mae Kon Ken school was hosting a sports day when explosions rocked the area in Tak province, Thailand, on November 21.
Terrified pupils fled into classrooms as a stray bullet landed on the school grounds.
School director Thawatchai Saengplang said the event was immediately cancelled and some 345 schoolchildren were evacuated.
He added: 'The school is currently assessing the situation and the safety of both teachers and students on a daily basis as the fighting continues.'
Authorities said the skirmishes have been ongoing for more than a month, with more than 100 Burmese villagers crossing over to seek refuge in Thailand.
Thai soldiers, local authorities, and police said security has been tightened along the border to protect Thai territory and assist refugees. Thai residents have been warned to stay away from border areas.
Myanmar has fallen into civil war following the removal of democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, with a military coup in 2021.
Soldiers responded with barbaric force on protesting civilians leading to widespread condemnation and financial sanctions. Rebel groups and civilian militias around the country have since been locked in a series of ongoing clashes with the ruling military.
Aung San Suu Kyi has since been jailed for 33 years on politically motivated charges and is likely to die behind bars unless the army is toppled - a tragic end the politician hailed by Barack Obama as an 'inspirational icon of democracy'.
