Indians arrested for 'running illegal gambling site from apartment in Thailand
Five Indian nationals were arrested for allegedly running an illegal gambling website from a condominium in Thailand.
The men were discovered working on laptops while operating an Indian online casino from the Thai 'Sin City' Pattaya on Wednesday.
Police stormed the second-floor unit on Soi Thep Prasit 17 following a tip-off about the group's illegal activities.
Footage shows officers raiding the suspects' work station, where they seized three laptops, 22 mobile phones, a tablet, credit cards, and a detailed logbook documenting incoming and outgoing transfers.
The transactions allegedly totalled around two million baht (47,185 GBP) for casino top-ups.
The suspects, identified by police as Shivam Shivam, 29, Sandeep Kumar, 24, Sakir Sakir, 27, Kapil Kapil, 24, and Gaurav Jaiswal, 39 , claimed they were customer service administrators but refused to clarify their exact roles.
Police Colonel Naphatphong Khositsuriyanmanee, commander of Chonburi Immigration, said the suspects are facing charges for 'being foreigners working without a permit or working outside the scope of authorised jobs'.
He added: ‘We will hand them over to Pattaya City Police Station for further legal action.'
Under Thailand's Foreign Employment Act, tourists are banned from working in dozens of occupations including tour guiding, labour work, agriculture, and hairdressing. They are also prohibited from working in the country without a valid permit.
Violators may be fined 5,000 to 50,000 THB (120 to 1,200 GBP) and may face deportation to their home country. They will also be banned from seeking a Thai work permit for two years.
Most forms of gambling are illegal in Thailand under the country's Gambling Act of 1935.
