China: South China's Guangdong pilots development of low-altitude economy
Storyline: South China's Guangdong pilots development of low-altitude economy [Voice_over] In China, drones and electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles, or eVTOLs, are being rapidly intergrated into everyday urban and industrial life. No where is that more apparent than in south China's Guangdong Province where strong industrial infrastructure, regional coordination and early policy development have turned the province into the epicenter of the country's low-altitude econonmy. Amongst the thousand of related firms in the region is EHang Intelligent Technology based in Guangzhou. They're the only company globaly to have obtained three regulatory certifications for a passenger-carrying autonomous aerial vehicle: type certificate, production certificate, and airworthiness certificate. At the city's Free Trade Zone, meanwhile, drones ferry packages from factory rooftops to customs inspection areas in a matter of minutes, with customs data being transmitted automatically during flight. Officials say using drones in this way could be a gamechanger for international shipments. [Sound_bite] Lin Canbin, Customs official: "To us, it's not just about physical movement of vehicles and goods, but also about synchronizing data flows with real-world logistics. These trials are laying the groundwork for international drone cargo operations." [Voice_over] From logistics and transportation to emergency rescues and entertainment, drones are also dotting the skylines of Shenzhen. During high-rise fire drills, specialized drones conduct reconnaissance, break windows, and deliver extinguishing agents, often arriving before ground crews. And some of the city's traffic lights have been retrofitted as launch and landing pads for drones patrolling roadways. One of the most spectacular use of drones are for entertainment purposes where they light up night skies in dazzling 3D displays. To date, Guangdong has launched over 700 drone routes serving a diverse range of case scenarios including urban management, agriculture, offshore inspections, and medical supply deliveries.
