The Chinese mainland is swiftly channeling aid to Hong Kong's relief work in the wake of a major residential complex fire that broke out in the region on Wednesday, with the central bank fast-tracking cross-border national currency donations and Red Cross Society raising approximately 16 million yuan (2.1 million U.S. dollars) of emergency funds for the victims. The People's Bank of China (PBOC), China's central bank, has suggested commercial banks to open a green channel for cross-border yuan donations to support search-and-rescue operations, medical treatment and relief works related to the fire in Hong Kong's Tai Po area, according to a notice from the central bank's Macroprudential Policy Bureau. The channel enables donated funds to be directly transferred on payment instructions without review from mainland institutions or individuals to Tai Po's designated fund account, as long as they complete required data submissions. The Red Cross Society of China on Friday delivered the 15.53 million yuan (2.1 billion U.S. dollars) of emergency funds, collected mostly from enterprises and individual donors, to the Hong Kong Red Cross. The headquarters of the Red Cross Society of China will continue to collect and forward donations and maintain close contact with the Hong Kong Red Cross to align with relief operations. At present, staff and volunteers from the Hong Kong Red Cross are working in temporary shelters, providing first-aid services, accommodation, psychological support and daily necessities to affected residents.
