Storyline: Chinese mainland nursing homes attract Hong Kong seniors with high-quality care [Voice_over] For an increasing number of retirees from Hong Kong, nursing homes in neighboring Guangdong Province are becoming attractive options due to their high-level of care and affordable prices. For this elderly couple, the decision to move to a nursing facility in Guangdong’s Foshan City was an easy one, given the long wait times and crowded conditions they faced at centers in Hong Kong. For over a year now, they've been enjoying the benefits of the mainland facility: exceptional care and a full schedule of engaging activities. [Sound_bite] Huang P'in-ai, Retiree from Hong Kong: "We visited some nursing homes in Hong Kong as well, but we found the conditions here to be much better. The environment is nicer and it's far more spacious. Given how cramped housing is in Hong Kong, as everyone knows, our decision was easy after seeing this place. We chose to come here." [Voice_over] Thanks to a Hong Kong government scheme, eligible seniors like Huang’s husband can access highly subsidized care at designated nursing facilities in Guangdong. And for those paying out-of-pocket, the costs are far lower than back home. [Sound_bite] Jiang Liming, director, nursing home: "For self-funded seniors, the cost here is between 420 and 1,100 U.S. dollars. But in Hong Kong, it would cost at least 30,000 Hong Kong dollars to stay in a comparable nursing institution, from what I understand." [Voice_over] Data shows that from 2014 to the middle of 2024, the number of Hong Kong residents aged 65 and above living in Guangdong increased by more than 40 percent, with cities like Guangzhou, Foshan and Zhongshan among the most popular destinations.
