Daduru Oya Dam: False Alarm! Focus on Downstream Flood Relief
Heavy rains brought by Cyclone Ditwah have forced the Irrigation Department to open all eight spill gates of the Daduru Oya Reservoir, releasing massive amounts of water and triggering a major flood crisis. While rumors on social media claim the dam has cracked, authorities have confirmed the structure is 100% safe. The real danger lies downstream, where the emergency release of 70,000 cubic feet of water per second has inundated low-lying villages in the Puttalam and Kurunegala districts.
The situation on the ground remains chaotic for travelers, with severe traffic congestion reported on major routes. Floodwaters have risen over the road at key crossing points, making the bridge completely impassable. Motorists are currently stranded in long queues, unable to cross as water flows dangerously over the tarmac. Police are urging drivers to avoid these routes entirely until water levels recede, as the current flow is strong enough to sweep vehicles away.
