“As you know, Al-Shifa Medical Complex is the largest medical complex in Gaza City and in all of Palestine. This complex used to serve all our people across Gaza City, from the north to the south. The occupation has completely destroyed this hospital.Of course, we made intensive efforts to restore some parts of the complex, and by Allah’s grace we succeeded in rehabilitating a portion of it. However, the part that has been rebuilt and completed does not cover more than thirty percent of the real needs of the Gaza Strip today."

“We are still suffering greatly from shortages in medical equipment, laboratory supplies, patient beds, operating rooms, and imaging rooms. All these shortages negatively affect the Palestinian citizens who deserve to receive proper medical care.”

“We lack essential medical supplies for orthopedic surgery, cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, and neurosurgery— 60% to 70% of these supplies are unavailable.”

“Yes, the buildings have been reconstructed, but buildings alone cannot function without medical equipment, laboratories, medicines, and medical consumables. Without these, we cannot operate or provide services to our people in the Gaza Strip.”

“Therefore, we call on all international organizations working in the Gaza Strip to pressure the occupation to open the crossings and allow the entry of medical devices, medicines, and supplies so we can provide proper healthcare in Gaza. Every day, there are victims who die— lives that could have been saved if these resources were available.”

“As you know, the medical teams are working under extremely harsh and unprecedented conditions. They are working without proper resources, and this has not happened anywhere else in the world. The medical staff are exhausted, yet despite this, they continue to do everything they can to save people’s lives.”

20. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) AL SHIFA HOSPİTAL DİRECTOR DR. MOHAMMED ABU SALMIYA, SAYING:

“Honestly, all departments need to be restored. As you can see, these are the destroyed sections— these are the main buildings of Al-Shifa Medical Complex. This building and that building used to contain the operating rooms, the intensive care units, and all imaging departments. These buildings were essential, and now, as you can see, they remain severely damaged due to the massive destruction inflicted on them, along with the equipment inside them. We restored one section or one building, but these major buildings are the core of Al-Shifa Medical Complex, and they remain devastated. We urgently need to rehabilitate and reactivate the operating rooms, the intensive care units, and all the necessary departments for these essential buildings.”

GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - DEC. 1: Al-Shifa Hospital, the largest medical complex in the Gaza Strip, has partially reopened two of its eleven buildings after they were severely damaged in Israeli military operations. However, hospital authorities report that critical shortages of medical equipment, supplies, and medicines are severely hampering its ability to serve the public.

The hospital, which served as the region's primary medical hub for decades, was extensively damaged during Israeli raids in November 2023 and March 2024. Many of its essential units, including operating theaters, intensive care units, and radiology departments, remain in ruins.

Before the attacks, the facility operated with 700 beds. Currently, only 300 beds are functional, and just 9 of its 22 operating rooms are in service.

Hospital Director Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya told Anadolu that reconstruction has begun on two destroyed buildings, one of which is the maternity ward. He emphasized, however, that the ongoing efforts restore only about 30% of the hospital’s pre-attack capacity.

"Buildings alone cannot function without medical equipment, laboratories, medicines, and medical consumables. Without these, we cannot operate or provide services to our people," Abu Salmiya stated.

He detailed severe deficits in vital supplies, including a 60% shortage of essential medications and emergency intervention supplies, and a 70% shortage of consumables for orthopedic, cardiac, and neurosurgical operations. Furthermore, 70% of the hospital's laboratory equipment was destroyed—equipment not available elsewhere in Gaza.

Abu Salmiya called on international organizations to pressure Israel to open border crossings and allow the entry of medical devices and pharmaceuticals. "Every day, there are victims who die—lives that could have been saved if these resources were available," he said.

The director also highlighted the urgent need to reestablish advanced medical units, such as CT and MRI scanners, cardiac catheterization labs, and early cancer screening systems.

He further pointed to a growing humanitarian crisis, noting that more than 16,500 patients are awaiting urgent treatment abroad, with over 1,070 having died due to border closures.

Abu Salmiya reported that healthcare staff, working nonstop for over two years under extreme conditions, are exhausted. He appealed for increased access for foreign medical teams to enter Gaza.

According to Palestinian officials, the healthcare system has suffered heavy losses: more than 1,700 medical staff have been killed and 350 detained by the Israeli military since the war began.

Data from the Gaza Government Media Office indicates that 34 hospitals and 80 healthcare centers have been completely put out of service, with 132 ambulances destroyed.
