United States - December 02, 2025 One year after a major rescue operation in Oklahoma, a lone pig saved from severe neglect is now thriving at Humane World for Animals’ Black Beauty Ranch in Murchison, Texas. Humane World for Animals, formerly the Humane Society of the United States, assisted the Grady County Sheriff’s Office in a large-scale cruelty case involving hundreds of animals kept in deplorable conditions. Among dogs, cats, goats, fish and birds, rescuers found one solitary pig described as “sweet and curious.” She was transferred to the 1,400-acre Black Beauty Ranch, home to nearly 600 animals from more than 40 species. Caregivers named her Sabine. Sabine needed time to learn how to live like a pig. Now she shares a large pasture with five others and enjoys proper food, toys, treats—especially apples—and plenty of space to forage, wallow and rest. Caregivers believe she had never experienced these things before. Sue Tygielski, senior managing director at Black Beauty Ranch, said, “When rescuers first saw her, she was standing alone shivering in freezing temperatures. She was underweight and had no food or water in her enclosure. No animal should suffer like that. Sabine is a very resilient girl and has come a long way in a year, including learning how to make friends and holding her own with her group. At just 2 years old, she is by far the loudest of our 27 pig residents and makes us smile every day.” Because pigs are social animals, Sabine’s caregivers introduced her slowly. She first lived beside a 7-year-old pig named Wichita, rescued in 2019 from a cruelty case in Maryland. Through a fence, they exchanged sniffs and greetings until Sabine grew more curious and confident. When they were paired, Sabine lacked social skills and often pushed past boundaries, but over time the two pigs bonded, sharing their wallow and food. Wichita taught her how to interact. Once the bond was strong, both pigs moved to a larger pasture with Bullard, Sandy, Cypress and Trinity. After a few weeks, Sabine adapted to the bigger group, and all six now get along well. Sabine and Wichita remain inseparable. Black Beauty Ranch is one of America’s largest and most diverse sanctuaries, providing permanent refuge to domestic and exotic animals rescued from laboratories, circuses, the pet trade, roadside zoos and cruelty cases. The facility is accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries and is a member of the Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance and the North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance.
