Relief efforts for floods and landslides across three provinces on Indonesia's Sumatra Island are continuing at full speed across the affected areas. The heavy rain, starting Nov. 23, caused rivers to swell in many parts of Sumatra, and landslides to occur in several areas, blocking transportation, disrupting power and communication, and leaving many remote villages temporarily out of contact. The death toll from floods and landslides across three provinces on Indonesia's Sumatra Island has risen to 811, with 623 others still listed as missing, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said on Wednesday. The BNPB stated in a press release that it had received 40 tons of relief supplies on Tuesday, coordinated by the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs. The aid included food, drinking water and medical equipment, which would be distributed to affected areas across the three provinces. In a village in Lobu Pining, North Sumatra, a church has been transformed into a shelter, where more than 280 evacuees are depending on the local government and public donations. Many of the evacuated residents are hungry and scramble for whatever they can get their hands on. "We are frankincense farmers. With two weeks of rain, we are unable to harvest our crops. The flood waters overflowed and washed every crop into the river. We don't know if we'll have enough money to celebrate Christmas with our family in December," said Mexwan Lumbantobing, one of the impacted residents. Lumbantobing's family was among the first batch of residents to arrive at the church when there were early warnings of landslides. "Our son has been sick for four days. We talked to the midwife here, so he can get better soon to go back to playing with his friends. We don't want him to be traumatized, although I very much am. Every time it looks like it's going to rain, we run and evacuate again and again," he said. The local government has installed satellite internet connection at the shelter, allowing evacuees to contact their families outside. Medical supplies, including medicines and medical services, are also ready at the shelter for residents, while more aid is being delivered by land, sea and air.
