Heavy rain pounded Indonesia this week, spawning torrential floods that killed at least 10 people.

Footage shows surging floods sweeping wood down an inundated street in Sibolga, Central Tapanuli, on November 25.

Terrified residents were forced to evacuate to higher floors as the water level kept rising.

Authorities said at least 1,902 people were affected by flash floods and landslides in Central Tapanuli, which is one of the worst-hit areas in North Sumatra.

As of Tuesday afternoon, floods had reached depths of up to 100 centimeters (three feet).

Masinton Pasaribu, Central Tapanuli Regent, said the Ministry of Social Affairs has provided relief aid as evacuation efforts were ongoing.

He said: 'There are 400 family kit packages, 400 packages of children's wear, 248 blankets, 164 mattresses, and 400 roll-up tents.'

Extreme weather has been lashing North Sumatra since November 24, triggering widespread flooding and landslides on the island.

Police today said at least 10 people were killed while six others were missing. Many of the casualties were from the Tapanuli region.

Abdul Muhari, spokesman for the national disaster agency, said: 'In Tapanuli Selatan, the disaster of floods and landslides has resulted in eight people losing their lives, 58 being injured, and 2,851 residents had to evacuate.'

Joint teams were deployed to help trapped residents and deliver aid.

The local government urged the public to remain vigilant, as extreme weather was forecast to continue.

Indonesia and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
