This is the dramatic moment Sakurajima Volcano blasted a 5,000ft plume of ash skywards in Japan.

Footage captured the volcano sending a towering column of ash and smoke into the sky over Kagoshima, on the southern island of Kyushu, on December 4 at around 8:47 pm.

The eruption was the 162nd explosive event recorded at the volcano this year.

Sakurajima is one of Japan's most active volcanoes, with a history of frequent eruptions. Originally an island, it became a peninsula after a significant eruption in 1914.
