JAKARTA, INDONESIA - DECEMBER 5, 2025: Relief and rescue operations continue across five Asian countries devastated by severe flooding, as the regional death toll climbed to 1,496 and hundreds remain missing, according to official data and local media reports on Thursday.

Unprecedented floods, landslides, storms, and cyclones have battered Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand, cutting off communities and washing away critical infrastructure. Emergency teams are struggling to reach remote areas, with authorities warning that the number of casualties may rise as more regions become accessible.

In Indonesia, where the impact has been among the most severe, aid is being delivered by air to isolated districts. On Friday, Dec. 5, officials in Jakarta prepared emergency food assistance at the Food Station warehouse in Cipinang for communities hit by flash floods in three Sumatran provinces. The 60 tons of supplies were loaded into three containers and shipped from Tanjung Priok Port to Belawan Port in North Sumatra, before being transported overland as key roads, previously blocked by landslides, became passable.

Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency reported that floods and landslides in Sumatra alone have killed 836 people, with 509 still missing and approximately 2,700 injured.

The devastating floods and landslides also affected over 3.2 million people, while more than 1 million displaced people were moved to safe areas in the flood-hit provinces of North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh.

The agency said that heavy equipment has been deployed in affected areas to clear roads and allow authorities to reach isolated communities to deliver essential aid.
