KHAN YOUNIS, GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - DEC. 15: Palestinian families in Khan Younis, Gaza Strip, Palestine, tried to return to their damaged homes on Monday, Dec. 15, seeking protection from heavy rain and flooding.

As temperatures dropped and rainwater flooded displacement camps, many families began building small shelters on rubble using stones and mud.

Mohammad Al-Shaer, whose house was destroyed in attacks, said living in tent camps had become extremely difficult after rainfall submerged their shelters. He added that families were using stones collected from rubble and mud to build temporary structures, hoping construction materials would be allowed into area.

Umm Imad, who lives in tent camp with her grandchildren, said she lost three children in attacks and that another child had been detained. She said families were left with no option but to live in tents as homes across area were destroyed.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, more than 390 people were killed and over 1060 injured in Israel’s ceasefire violations in the enclave since Oct. 10.

Israel has killed nearly 70,700 people, mostly women and children, and injured over 171,100 in attacks in Gaza since October 2023, which have continued despite the truce.
