5. WHITE FLASH
6. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) DISPLACED PALESTINIAN, HALIMA JUNAID, SAYING:
“Living here means fear and terror. We are afraid it could collapse on our children, that it could fall on us and kill our children. We have heard about people whose turn it came, whose houses collapsed completely. I am afraid everything will collapse. I have nothing—no husband, no support, only my children. It’s not right.”
7. WHITE FLASH
8. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) DISPLACED PALESTINIAN, HALIMA JUNAID, SAYING:
“I am afraid the roof will fall on my children at any moment. Every moment. Even when we go to sleep at night, my mind never rests. I lie awake thinking, praying, saying: ‘In God’s name, protect my children. In Allah’s name, don’t let these broken beams fall on them. In God’s name, don’t let the walls fall on them. In Allah’s name, protect them from this winter rain.’ There are many people who did not survive.”

12. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) DISPLACED PALESTINIAN, MOHAMMAD BASSAM MOHAMMED HAMOUD, SAYING:
My wife was killed in this war. We were displaced many times, moving from one place to another, first from Jabal al-Balad. Wherever we went, we were displaced again, until we came to this place where we are now, in Bouslat al-Shawa. This shelter we are living in—only Allah knows how it is holding up. The roof is supposed to protect us, but it barely does. It does not really protect us from the rain or from the cold.”
13. WHITE FLASH
14. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) DISPLACED PALESTINIAN, MAHMOUD BASSAM MAHMOUD HAMIDAH, SAYING:
“There is no other place. There is nowhere permanent to go. Jabaliya is besieged; there is not even a single safe area. It is under fire and constant bombardment. Even if we wanted to return, there is no shelter and no way to live there. It might be possible to stay in that area, but the conditions are extremely difficult—from water to aid, to everything needed for daily life. Life there is almost nonexistent.”
15. WHITE FLASH
16. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) DISPLACED PALESTINIAN, MAHMOUD BASSAM MAHMOUD HAMIDAH, SAYING:
“I am sitting here, genuinely afraid. We hear frightening news about severe weather systems and heavy rains. Sometimes we think we might have to leave at any moment, but there is nowhere else to go. All we want is a place where we can live with dignity, a suitable life for our children—somewhere we can stay, even in tents, as long as there is safety, at least some sense of security.”

GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - DEC. 15: Palestinian families displaced by ongoing hostilities are facing a new threat to their survival as heavy winter rains cause already damaged buildings to collapse, adding to the severe humanitarian crisis in the besieged enclave.
Recent days have seen a powerful polar low-pressure system sweep across Gaza, bringing torrential rain, strong winds, and freezing temperatures. The Gaza Media Office reported on Saturday that the storm led to the collapse of multiple buildings that had been previously damaged in Israeli attacks, killing 11 Palestinians and causing an estimated $4 million in direct damage.
Civil Defense teams recovered the bodies and continue to search for at least one missing person. According to the statement, at least 13 homes collapsed across Gaza, all structures that had been struck earlier in the war. The storm also swept away or flooded more than 27,000 tents, with over 53,000 tents either fully or partially damaged in total. The destruction has directly impacted more than 250,000 displaced Palestinians.
For many, like Halima Junaid, a displaced widow living in a heavily damaged building in Gaza City, life is now consumed by constant fear. "We are afraid it could collapse on our children, that it could fall on us and kill our children," she told Anadolu on Monday, Dec. 15. "I have nothing—no husband, no support, only my children... Even when we go to sleep at night, my mind never rests."
The storm compounds the dire conditions for Gaza's roughly 1.5 million people living in tents and makeshift shelters that offer minimal protection from the elements. Many, like Mahmod Bassam Mahmoud Hamidah, who lost his wife in Israeli strikes and has been displaced multiple times, feel they have nowhere left to turn.
"We were displaced many times, moving from one place to another... This shelter we are living in—only Allah knows how it is holding up," he said. "There is no other place. There is nowhere permanent to go... All we want is a place where we can live with dignity."
While a ceasefire has been in effect since Oct. 10, living conditions have not significantly improved. Israel continues to impose strict restrictions on the entry of aid trucks, a violation of the humanitarian protocol of the agreement, according to authorities in Gaza.
The Israeli military campaign, which began in October 2023, has resulted in over 70,300 fatalities, mostly women and children, and more than 171,000 injuries, according to Palestinian health authorities. The attacks have continued despite the truce.
