“May God protect us through the night, may God protect us through the night. We put our trust in God through the night while we are sitting here. All night long we were afraid, holding on to water and whatever we had. Shelling spread through our neighborhood here. We went out and said our prayers, but the world has abandoned us. They say this suffering has lasted for three generations—forty years or more—but on the second night this year, the walls collapsed on them, and nothing was spared.”

“By God, we are afraid—truly afraid. So many explosions. By God, all night long we are exhausted and terrified. They broke through the roof, they hit the roof; we climb onto the roof and we are afraid of the attack. The destruction they have brought upon us has crushed our lives and our country. They are killing our children—killing the sons of honorable families, killing them again and again. What can we say about this suffering, this pain, and this loss of all goodness?”

GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - JAN. 13: A Palestinian displaced woman and her disabled son are living in a makeshift shelter among the rubble in the western Gaza Strip, struggling to survive under harsh conditions after their home was destroyed in an Israeli attack.
Umm Ahmed Hannawi, an elderly woman from Jabaliya Refugee Camp, was forced to take shelter with her family beneath the remnants of a nearly demolished structure following the destruction of her home. The family now lives in constant fear of the precarious ruins collapsing around them.
“We are staying here under constant threat of death—literally living under death,” Umm Ahmed told an Anadolu. “I swear to God… We are scattered everywhere, just trying to survive.”
The family lives in anxiety, fearing their shelter’s roof could collapse at any moment, a danger that has already claimed lives in similar incidents across Gaza.
The woman said she lost two of her sons during the conflict and now cares for her disabled son and remaining children under severe humanitarian conditions. “All night long we were afraid … the world has abandoned us,” she said.
“The destruction they have brought upon us has crushed our lives and our country. They are killing our children—killing the sons of honorable families, killing them again and again,” the desperate mother added.
Despite a ceasefire agreement, Israel’s continued blockade on the Gaza Strip severely restricts access to basic food and medicine, exacerbating the plight of families like Umm Ahmed’s.
Heavy rains and freezing temperatures have further worsened their situation due to a lack of adequate shelter and protection from the cold.
The conflict, which began on Oct. 8, 2023, resulted in widespread devastation across the Gaza Strip. According to Palestinian figures, more than 71,000 Palestinians have been killed and over 171,000 wounded.
Approximately 90% of civilian infrastructure is reported destroyed, with an estimated 70 million tonnes of rubble accumulated. Thousands of bodies are believed to remain buried under the debris.
Palestinian sources report that Israeli forces continue operations in Gaza despite a ceasefire agreement that took effect on Oct. 10.
