Liu Zhongyi, Chinese Assistant Public Security Minister, and Thailand's Anti Cyber Scam Centre led by Assistant National Police Chief Police Lieutenant General Jirabhop Bhuridej, were part of the contingent.

Footage shows high-rise buildings, said to have been used as hideouts, had been reduced to rubble to 'uproot' Chinese-run syndicates operating transnational scams.

A meeting was later held, where Thailand proposed to create a joint task force and offered to use the Anti Cyber Scam Centre as an information exchange hub.

All parties planned to cut off key enabling factors, including electricity supply and internet signals, to starve criminal networks along the border.

The leadership agreed to streamline the repatriation of foreign nationals that had fled from the scam compounds.

China has been stepping up crackdowns on scam compounds in lawless Myanmar and neighbouring Cambodia, amid international pressure from developed countries.

In November, a Shenzhen court sentenced five people to death for being involved in a violent scam gang in Myanmar's Kokang region.

Border areas between Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia have become hubs for online fraud since the pandemic.

The United Nations reports that billions of dollars have been generated from the trafficking of hundreds of thousands of people forced to work in these compounds.
