US, Phoenix: Phoenix Grappler Stops Stolen Minivan Driven By 13-Year-Old
Phoenix, United States - December 19, 2025 12/19/2025 03:10 am GMT-0700 PHOENIX, Ariz. – According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers in the area of 43rd Avenue and Glendale Avenue spotted a stolen Toyota Sienna minivan traveling east on Glendale Avenue from 43rd Avenue. Phoenix Police Tactical Support Bureau units responded to assist and began tracking the stolen van from a distance. Tactical Support Bureau resources devised a plan to pre-emptively deploy a Grappler device to the stolen van, eliminating the risk of a felony flight. A Tactical Support Bureau officer in an unmarked SUV approached the stolen van from behind and deployed the Grappler device. The Grappler deployment was successful, and the van was brought to an abrupt stop near 40th Avenue and Cactus Wren Drive. Tactical Support Bureau units quickly converged on the immobilized van, and a high-risk traffic stop was initiated. Officers issued commands, ordering any occupants to exit the van. An unidentified passenger complied with commands and was detained without incident. The driver, identified as a 13-year-old female, refused to comply with commands and attempted to barricade herself inside the van. A short time later, the teen entered the driver's seat and attempted to break free from the Grappler tether. The attempt was unsuccessful, and the van remained tethered to the unmarked police SUV. The teenage suspect exited the vehicle but continued to disobey the officers' commands. Compliance was gained following the deployment of a less-lethal projectile, and the suspect was promptly taken into custody. Firefighters responded to the scene a short time later and transported the suspect to a local hospital with minor injuries sustained from the less-lethal projectile.
