Passengers injured in escalator accident at train station in Brazil
Passengers were left injured in an escalator accident at a train station in Brazil.
The travellers reportedly fell on the moving staircase when a shopping cart became stuck at Bras Station in Sao Paulo on December 18.
Authorities said the stepway connected platforms two and three, serving lines 10-Turquoise and 11-Coral, in the downward direction.
To manage the situation, Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM) switched off the escalator, which caused even more congestion on the lower platform.
Local media reported that at least 13 people were injured, though none suffered serious harm. Victims were treated by SAMU (Mobile Emergency Care Service) and taken to nearby hospitals.
Footage shows distressed passengers being assisted by first responders, with some still on the ground following the fall.
A CPTM spokesman said: 'The incident of passengers falling on the escalator at Bras Station on the Line 10-Turquoise platform, heading towards Rio Grande da Serra, occurred this Thursday morning, around 8:30 am, due to misuse of the equipment.
'A shopping cart got caught on the side of the escalator, causing people to fall.'
Authorities reminded the public to use escalators safely, avoid bringing trolleys or large objects onto moving stairs, and follow all safety signage.
