Smoke filled a train carriage in Taiwan earlier this morning after a mobile phone overheated and caught fire, causing panic among the passengers.

The incident unfolded on the Taipei Metro Tamsui-Xinyi Line at around 7:11 am on August 19, as a train bound for Xiangshan was pulling into Shuanglian Station.

Passengers quickly noticed the smoke filling the cabin and alerted the metro staff.

Footage shows commuters rushing from the coach as smoke spread throughout the carriage.

The stationmaster responded immediately after being notified by the train control centre and found that a passenger's phone had overheated and was emitting smoke.

The affected traveller was assisted off the train, while station staff quickly extinguished the small blaze using a fire extinguisher.

Authorities said the situation was brought under control within minutes, causing only a brief disruption on the platform.

Taipei Metro later confirmed that, following an inspection, no visible damage was found, only a lingering burning smell remained inside. Normal operations resumed after cleaning, with no reported delays.

Officials reminded passengers not to use damaged or overheating electronic devices onboard and urged them to report any unusual incidents immediately to ensure public safety.
