A frightened dog that slipped through a narrow gap between two walls to escape New Year's Eve fireworks became stuck before being rescued.

The stray pooch was startled by the loud celebrations and squeezed into the 12 inch (30 cm) space to seek shelter in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand.

However, it could not crawl back out, prompting concerned residents to call firefighters for help.

Footage shows the brown mutt lodged sideways at the end of the gap as volunteers arrived on January 1.

Local Sorawit Suwanrassamee said: 'The dog became stuck at around 10 pm on December 31. People tried to help, but the fireworks were still going off.'

Sorawit added that they tried to pull the animal out with neighbours, but it kept retreating.


He said: ‘It was scared of the noise and afraid of being grabbed, so it kept backing further in until it was completely stuck. It cried until around 4 am or 5 am.

‘I only found out at about 9 am when neighbours asked me to help. Then I called a friend, who advised me to contact the municipal disaster prevention and mitigation team, and they came to rescue it.

‘I could not stop thinking about it and could not just let it go.'

One rescue team member climbed onto the roof to lower a net on a pole and hook the male dog, estimated to be five years old.

He handed it to colleagues on the ground, who carefully pulled the dog to safety.

The exhausted stray was uninjured and laid on the ground until it regained enough strength to stand before being given food.
