Farmers in Greece block highways as nationwide protests over rising costs and EU trade deal

Greek farmers escalate nationwide protests, launching a 48-hour blockade of major highways, junctions and key transport routes across the country on Thursday. Tractors were positioned on central motorways, halting traffic in both directions, including sections of the main highway linking Athens and Thessaloniki at the Malgara area in northern Greece.

The blockades were part of coordinated actions protesting soaring production costs, demands for stronger state support, and opposition to the European Union’s proposed EU–Mercosur trade agreement. Traffic was halted for all vehicles except emergency services, while police redirected drivers to secondary roads where possible and did not intervene to dismantle the blockades.

Greece’s conservative government warned it would not tolerate prolonged disruptions to critical transport infrastructure as farmers continued to intensify pressure through nationwide road closures.
