Iranian naval ship IRIS Shahid Mahdavi seen sailing of South Africa’s coast
Cape Town, South Africa - 13 January 2026: The Iranian naval vessel IRIS Shahid Mahdavi has been spotted off the False Bay coast near the Simon’s Town naval base, South Africa’s largest naval base. The ship joined the naval vessels from other BRICS Plus nations taking part in naval exercises being hosted in South African territorial waters.
The vessels were spotted despite local news reports which claimed that Iran had withdrawn from the exercises. The IRIS Shahid Mahdavi is a warship capable of carrying helicopters, drones and missile launchers.
