Cape Town, South Africa: 9 January 2026: A small group Ukranian immigrants living in Cape Town picketed outside the Simon’s Town naval base ahead of the arrival of Russian naval ships. A Russian shop the Stoikiy docked at the naval base shortly after the picket started and the protesters had left. The ship is in Cape Town to take part in naval excuses between BRICS nations. Ships from Iran and China sailed into Cape Town earlier this week.

The picket was organised by the Ukrainian Association of South Africa. The organisation has organised several protests against Russia since the country went to war with Ukraine in 2022.

Katerina Fedkima from the Ukrainian Association of South Africa condemned Russia’s presence in South Africa’s territorial waters saying “Russian military navy training is a killing machine, it’s killing Ukrainians every day. It’s killing our children, our people. We cannot stand aside.”
