Starmer Warns X Could Lose Right To Self Regulate Over AI Deepfake Concerns. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer warns that X could lose its right to self-regulate if it fails to control the use of its AI chatbot Grok. Speaking to Labour MPs, Starmer says the government will step in if the platform cannot prevent the creation of non-consensual intimate images. He confirms new laws will come into force making it illegal to create such images, alongside fresh legislation banning the supply of online tools used to produce them. The warning follows growing concern over reports that Grok has been used to alter images of real people. Regulator Ofcom has now launched an investigation into X, saying the allegations are deeply concerning. If X is found to have breached the law, Ofcom could fine the company up to ten percent of its global revenue, or £18 million. In extreme cases, it could also seek a court order to block access to the platform in the UK. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall urges the regulator to act quickly, as the government moves to enforce long-delayed legislation targeting deepfake abuse.
