Sinkhole swallows car on road where crane collapsed killing two drivers
A sinkhole swallowed a car on the same road where a crane collapsed killing two drivers in Thailand.
The ground gave way as a pickup truck was driving through the Rama II Road in Samut Sakhon province on January 17.
The vehicle plunged nose-first as water sprayed onto the pavement.
Footage shows motorists battling through the flooded road as the pickup was stuck with its rear end in the air.
The driver, Samphan, said: 'I was driving as usual on Rama II Road when the surface suddenly gave way, and my truck dropped into a hole.
'Water gushed out and I panicked and jumped out of the car because I was scared it would sink further. Luckily, I wasn't going fast and I was alone so I escaped unhurt.'
Officials said the sinkhole was caused by a ruptured water pipe that caused road subsidence.
Weerayut Thongwatcharanon, director of waterworks for Samut Sakhon Municipality, said on Sunday: 'Workers are currently restoring the road surface and removing equipment from the site, and traffic is expected to return to normal later today, in the afternoon.
'Once all inbound lanes are fully reopened, this should significantly ease congestion, particularly from Tha Chin River bridge to the Talay Thai market area.'
Just days earlier, a crane collapsed onto the road, leaving two drivers dead.
The heavy equipment plunged onto the road during an elevated motorway construction on the outskirts of the capital Bangkok, on Thursday.
Huge beams of metal and lumps of concrete crushed two cars below.
An investigation was launched into the construction, which is being done by the same company involved with the high-speed rail project crane that collapsed onto a train in Nakhon Ratchasima on January 14, leaving at least 32 passengers dead and dozens more injured.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said he would cancel the construction contracts involved and place the contractor, Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited, on a blacklist.
Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said: 'I have ordered the immediate suspension of the 13 remaining projects until the Ministry of Transport grants permission to resume, ensuring total safety.'
Special committees have been formed to investigate both incidents, and a fact-finding report is expected within a week, he added.
Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited was also previously involved in the collapse of the State Audit Office building in March 2025.
