“Today this was snow on the high fells combined with a biting wind and later a little sunshine. To protect the smallest of the lambs in their first few days the farmers wrap them in little plastic duvets. Numbers are drawn on mother and babies for the farmers easy identification, but the mothers know their offspring by smell and they push away any youngsters that are not their own that try to suckle them.”
